The Umbrella Academy Season 2
The Umbrella Academy is an unlikely hit and for very good reason. It’s a superhero story with a difference. In a world where we are becoming tired of the same superhero tropes and storylines, it’s nice to see something a little different. With the same characteristics we expect but with some surprises we didn’t and with season one well under way, will there be a season 2 of Umbrella Academy on Netflix?
The Umbrella Academy Season 2 Release Date
Netflix The Umbrella Academy Viewers of The Umbrella Academy are ready to watch Season 2 just days after Season 1 released on Netflix. The series had a great storyline and left viewers with a lot. I certainly hope so!
If you haven’t see Umbrella Academy on Netflix yet, I’ll try to keep the spoilers to a minimum.
Umbrella Academy season 1
The Umbrella Academy comic books were written by My Chemical Romance’s Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá. It’s a character-driven show that’s more a slow burner as we get to know the characters and their powers than a full throttle, special effects-driven showpiece and I like it for that. Those who prefer instant gratification may move on after a couple of episodes but those who remain are rewarded with an engaging story with a difference.
Admittedly, the opener isn’t the most auspicious start with a wrestler and a space squid but once the birth of the superheroes is over and done with, we can get on with the story.
The Umbrella Academy follows a group of superheroes, known as the Hargreeves orphans, as they are birthed in various parts of the world. Their adopted father, Sir Reginald Hargreeves takes them on and begins training them with their various powers. Think a cross between Harry Potter and Sense8 and you won’t be far wrong.
There is a core team of seven, Luther, Diego, Allison, Klaus, Number Five, Ben, and Vanya who the story follows. They complete their training at the school and move on with their lives. Twelve years later Sir Reginald Hargreeves dies and the team come together for a reunion with a difference.
Umbrella Academy is a mix of dysfunctional family, cop procedural, superhero show, detective novel and What Happened to Sunday. It’s a real mix of genres and is no one thing. I liked the series but thought it could have been shorter. Should have been shorter as it is ten episodes made from six comic books.
The stars, Ellen Page, Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan and Aidan Gallagher do well with their parts and its good to see a mix of established actors and newcomers in a show. The assassins, Mary J Blige and Cameron Britton both do well too.
I cannot fault any performance really as they are all credible and as long as you accept the Umbrella Academy for what it is, escapist entertainment with a quirky twist, you’re fine.
Will there be a season 2 of Umbrella Academy?
When Will Season Two Of Umbrella Aca…
So will there be a season 2 of Umbrella Academy? I think so. Way and Bá wrote three series, The Umbrella Academy – Apocalypse Suite, Dallas and Hotel Oblivion. This first season took most of The Umbrella Academy and a little of Dallas to create series one. The first series also left the door wide open for another series with more than a few things unresolved.
I think there will be a season 2 of Umbrella Academy for a couple of reasons. One, there is already the source material ready to use. Two, Netflix knows superhero and comic book adaptations work. Three, now Marvel has gone over to Disney, Netflix has to come up with alternatives to scratch that superhero and comic book itch. The Umbrella Academy could be it.
As an added bonus, it should travel well too. Other countries are nowhere near as into comic books as Americans. As the Umbrella Academy is more about family, dysfunction and character-driven storytelling than most, it should translate well in other territories. Netflix has a great grasp of its global audience and knows what each country likes and wants to see. Even though it is often hamstrung by licensing, the company tries to deliver on that too. I think The Umbrella Academy will be successful across the world.
For those reasons I expect Netflix to commission a series 2 of The Umbrella Academy. The door is open for a return of all the Hargreeves. With time travel a big part of this series, there is literally nothing that’s off the table regardless of where the characters are now.
At the time of writing, Netflix have not said either way whether there will be a series 2 of The Umbrella Academy. I think they are waiting for the numbers to decide but with the departure of Jessica Jones and The Punisher, there is a hole in their repertoire that The Umbrella Academy could fill so I won’t be betting against it.
