Violetta is a Disney Channel teen soap opera that first aired on May 14th, 2012 in Latin America. After a run of 240 episodes across three seasons, it ended on February 6th, 2015.

Violetta (Martina Stoessel) is a teenage Argentinian girl who has just moved back to her hometown, Buenos Aires, from Spain. There, she will find love and discover her talent for music. However, her father, Germán (Diego Ramos), forbids her to pursue her talent because her mother died in an accident during a concert tour he wanted her to take. From time to time, she escapes to an art academy for teens called Studio 21, where she meets new friends, finds love, and works on her music.

From season 2 onwards, Violetta and friends deal with their fame from being featured on the YouMix website in the second half of season one. Studio 21 is renamed Studio On Beat as a result of a partnership with YouMix. Germán struggles giving Violetta her freedom but tries his best to support her through her journey. While she continues to deal with love triangles, Violetta will also face new challenges and changes in her life.

This is the first Disney Channel series to be co-produced with Pol-Ka Productions. Thanks to the success of the series, it won't be the last, with Soy Luna launching in 2016. Violetta was mostly shot in Argentina, but has a multinational cast and is broadcast throughout all of Latin America, most EMEA territories, some of Asia, and briefly in Oceania. In the United States, the first season originally aired in Spanish on Azteca from September 1st, 2014 to December 19. Eventually on July 10th, 2015, Netflix put the first two seasons on their streaming service for the United States in English and Spanish, including subtitles for the latter. The third season was added later that year on December 31st.

A movie, titled Tini: El gran cambio de Violetta* (Tini: The Movie in English) was first released in France on 4th May, 2016, with the rest of Europe and Latin America getting theatrical releases soon after. Some time after the series finale, Violetta returns from an exhausting world tour and is shaken by rumors surrounding her love life. Germán gives his daughter an invitation to spend some time with a mysterious family friend named Isabella at her house for young artists in Italy. There, she will try and find her true self and inspiration.. and will continue to deal with more love problems. The film ties in with Stoessel's start of her solo career, and is inspired by her transitioning to a post-Violetta life. It is available on Netflix in the US and the soundtrack was released internationally with her debut album, also called TINI.

This work provides examples of:

  • Alpha Bitch: Played straight with Ludmila,
    • Beta Bitch: Naty. After the events of season 1, she warms up to Violetta and her friends and stands up for herself more often, but still sticks by Ludmila's side as her best friend/sidekick.
  • Abusive Parents: Ludmilla‘s mother Priscilla abuses her daughter emotionally threatens her and forces her to do things she doesn’t want to do, she also pushed her stepdaughter Violetta down the stairs.
  • Back for the Finale: Officer Parodi and Matias are shown to have made up at the wedding at the end. Marotti is present too despite not being relevant to the plot after Ludmila quits YouMix.
  • Big Bad: Ludmila, Gregório, and to a certain extent, Jade and Matias and later Ludmilla‘s mother Priscilla.
  • Book-Ends:
    • All three seasons begin with Violetta at an airport, narrating her life up to that point, and end with her winking to the audience after the final musical number, except after the monologue in season three, it turns out that she's actually in the middle of a live performance.
    • The ending of The Stinger has a close up of Violetta closing her diary, with an old animation of the show's logo following, as the music-box version of the theme song play in the background, mirroring a teaser from before the show started.
  • The Bus Came Back: Federico comes back to Buenos Aires in the second half of season 2. It's also been confirmed that Angie returns in season 3.
  • Cannot Talk to Women: Poor Braco ends up speaking in Russian or whatever language whenever he tries to talk to a girl he likes.
  • Catchphrase: 'Ludmila se va.'*
    • 'En mi pais hay una palabra para eso.'*
  • Celebrity Star: Bridgit Mendler's appearance in season 2, R5's appearance in season 3, and, to an extent, College 11's appearance in season 1.
  • Chuck Cunningham Syndrome: Luca, Braco, and Napo are no where to be seen in Season 2. No one has really acknowledged either character's absence, aside from a brief mention of Luca as Francesca gets ready to move back to Italy. Lara also falls under this in season 3.
  • Cliffhanger: Being a telenovela, it's to be expected that most, if not all, episodes end with at least a minor one to be resolved easily the following day. However, unlike other programs in the format, the show would take months long breaks during first run airings. The following examples occurred before such breaks in its original Latin American run.
    • Season 1, Episode 40: Gregorio ruins the show being run by Studio 21. Angie and German make it in time to see the destruction, but we don't know if German saw Violetta on stage.
    • Season 2, Episode 40: Violetta tells Camila that she is unable to sing after a large performance. Jade announces she'll tell 'the truth' to German in front of Esmeralda after she discovers Matias has run away. Francesca tells Marco that she is returning to Italy. Angie overhears Naty figuring out Ludmila's plan with Diego and Violetta.
    • Season 3, Episode 20: Before a performance in Spain, Pablo gets a call that has him wanting to cancel the show. The screen fades to black before he is able to tell the students what it was. It turns out to be Antonio's death.
    • Season 3, Episode 40: The studio is in danger of closing, again, and Leon discovers Violetta was Roxy this whole time after a kiss.
    • Season 3, Episode 60: Jade is in the process of closing the studio after she discovers that German still has feelings for Angie, despite his relationship with Priscila. Leon and Violetta, after over half a season of fighting, share a kiss during a music video shooting.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Jade and her brother, Matias.
  • Creator Cameo: Director Martin Saban makes an appearance at the end as a guest at German and Angie's wedding.
  • Crossover: Rock Bones of the Disney XD series Peter Punk have guest starred on the show in season 1 and had a minor role in the last two seasons. Also, the contest winner who appears early on in the second season, DJ, is from Cuando toca la campana, the Latin American version of As the Bell Rings.
  • Crowd Song: Everyone at Angie's wedding dances and sings to Crecimos Juntos at the end of the original cut of the series finale.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: The show attempts this with Ludmila multiple times. Once at the last episode of season one, another as a result of Ludmila falling in love with Federico during season two, and the last being a major plot point throughout season three.
  • Disappeared Dad: Ludmila's divorced father is revealed to be living in Africa during Season 3.
    • Visit by Divorced Dad: Ludmila's father drops by near the end of the season to make up with her.
  • 'Do It Yourself' Theme Tune: En mi mundo, preformed by Martina Stoessel. She also sings the Italian and English intros.
  • Every One Has Standarts: Jade is Horrorfyed when she learns that Priscilla pushed Violetta down the stairs, stating that never would have done something like that.
  • Foreign Language Theme: In some countries that don't have Spanish as an official language, the theme song is changed to a dubbed one. However, the songs sung in-universe are kept in Spanish.
  • Freudian Excuse: Ludmilla being Emotionally Abused by her Mother is one of the main reasons why she’s the Alpha Bitch
    • In the English-dubbed version, the songs are translated into English as well. Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the Nordic dubs use these songs.
  • Gold Digger: Matias and Jade. Matias actually pushes Jade into a marriage with Germán so they can share his income.
  • Gratuitous English: Used a lot in the show.
    Ludmila: English is mine.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Angie.
  • Homeschooled Kids: Violetta mentions that she's had a tutor through out her time in Europe. Angie is later hired for the job.
  • Inconsistent Dub: The English translation tends to change the lyrics to the songs every now and then.
    • There are actually two different translations to En mi mundo that were used. One is sung by Martina Stoessel for the theme song and the other is sung in-universe by someone else, whose lyrics change occasionally.
  • Keep It Foreign: In season 2 and 3, some of the English songs are dubbed into French in the English dub, while others are re-dubbed by the English voice actors. 'Underneath It All' is a notable example of a song that was left alone.
  • Killed Off for Real: Antonio during season 3. While the series doesn't spend much time grieving over him, it does focus on what happens to professional relations between the studio and investors as a result of his death.
  • Living a Double Life: Clement attends Studio On Beat under the name 'Alex' trying to hide from his dad, who does not want him to become a musician.
  • Missing Mom: The aforementioned mom of Violetta.
  • Multinational Team: Tomás, Diego, and Naty are Spanish. León, Marco, and Gery are Mexican. Francesca, her brother Luca, and Federico are Italian. Broduey is Brazilian. Clement/Alex is French. Braco is from a country that he never really gets the chance to say. All the other main characters are Argentinian.
    • Plus, Violetta grew up in Spain.
    • In season 2, Libi, a contest winner from Israel, joins the gang for a few episodes. Matylda from Poland has a similar situation in season 3.
  • My Sister Is Off-Limits!: Luca is very defensive when it comes to someone wanting to date Francesca. Same goes for Andrés when it comes to his sister.
  • No Pronunciation Guide: Characters in the English dub pronounce Ramallo's name with an 'l' sound, not with a 'sh' or 'y' sound.
  • Oblivious to Love: Tomás, to Francesca.
    • Ramallo, to Olga.
    • Violetta, to Braco.
    • Léon, to Gery.
    • Violetta, to Alex.
  • Love Dodecahedron: Oh boy..
    • Léon went out with Ludmila before she fell in love with Tomás and he fell in love with Violetta. Violetta is in love with both Léon and Tomás. Francesca loves Tomás, but he likes her only as a friend. Along with Camila, she also had a crush on Broduey for some time, though. In Season 2, we have Lara, who likes Leon too, and Diego, who will fight for Violetta after Tomás is Put on a Bus. Season 3 brings us Clement, who likes Violetta after she helps him get in the studio, and Gery, who falls in love with Léon after he helps her land a job at Gregorio's new dance studio, Art Rebel.
    • And for the adults, Jade is engaged to Germán so she and Matias can steal his money, but he can't stop thinking of Angie, who Pablo and Rafa Palmer are also interested in during season 1. Eventually in season 2, Pablo gets over his feelings for Angie when he meets Jackie, whom Beto also has feelings for, while Germán falls in love with Esmeralda, an actress paid by Jade and Mati in a complicated plan, leaving Angie alone..
  • Love Triangle:
    • Marco's ex-girlfriend from Mexico, Ana, tries to tear his relationship with Francesca apart so she can get him back.. it didn't work.
    • During season 2, Oscar Cardozo falls in love with Olga, to Ramallo's dismay. Later in season 3, Olga and Beto fall in love after she has a fall out with Ramallo over commitment issues, but Olga's love for Beto fades after a while.
  • Promotion to Opening Titles: Federico, originally a competitor in Talentos 21, had a bigger role in the second half of season 2. Eventually, he goes on to appear in the intro at the start of season 3.
  • Put on a Bus:
    • Tomas returns to Spain when an opportunity to pursue his music closer to home pops up at the end of season one.
    • Marco is given the chance to go to London to attend a different school. He accepts, and is last seen wishing the gang good luck before a performance in Spain.
  • Rearrange the Song:
    • Along with each season getting a new mix of the theme song, an assignment during Season 2 had the students do this along with filming a music video for it.
    • Along with many Dub Name Changes, the Dutch dub rearranges and translates the song to 'The World is Mine' with Dutch and English lyrics. Eventually, they reverted it back to the original.
  • The Stinger: After the Grand Finale, a special interstitial played with Violetta reflecting back on moments throughout the series while writing in her diary.
  • The Reveal:
    • Violetta finds out about Angie's job at Studio 21 when she's introduced as a judge for the entrance exam. Later on in the season, Ludmila shows Violetta a tape of Angie mentioning that she's the woman named Angeles that Maria calls her sister in her diary.
    • During Season 2, we find out that Ludmila and Diego are working together on a plan, which was supposed to make Violetta leave the studio, when she goes out to meet the person she was making calls to during the first half of the season.
  • Same Language Dub:
    • Rock Bones's performance with Violetta in Season 1. While the boys' singing was left untouched, Martina Stoessel's singing was dubbed in by her English singing VO. Italian singing was also dubbed during Season 1 too.
    • The English songs from season 2 onward were dubbed by Violetta's singing voice, despite not sounding anywhere close to her speaking voice.
  • Second Episode Introduction:
    • Despite being featured in the opening sequence, Ludmila's cousin, Napo, isn't introduced until around episode 10. Broduey, also in the intro, doesn't make his first appearance until after the halfway point of season 1.
    • Marco made his first appearance in the second episode of season 2.
    • Although she had a role in promos filmed for the season, Gery doesn't start appearing until a couple of weeks in season 3.
  • Series Fauxnale: While the end of each season was filmed without the knowledge of a renewal, Season 3 was announced as the final season, with some plots that started in season 1, namely the Will They or Won't They? plot between Angie and German, wrapping up in the finale. That being said, the announcement of The Movie that takes place after it makes it this.
  • Talent Show: The school partners up with a web company called YouMix for one called 'Talentos XXL'.
  • The Song Remains the Same: The English dub usually averts this, but College 11's performance was kept unchanged, since it was in English.
  • Trailers Always Spoil: It's common for the end credits to have the next episode's cliffhanger play during the montage, or spoil the outcome for some minor plots.
    • Averted whenever the show goes on a break, which happened halfway through the season for Seasons 1 and 2, and every twenty episodes for Season 3. Instead, a music video from the episode plays in the preview section of the credits (exceptions being the last two breaks of the series, which used clips from the following week). A non-revealing promo also plays a week before the show returns with new episodes.
  • Two-Teacher School: For a school with a reputation for having successful alumni, it's surprising to believe that the the most teachers that were employed at a time is five. (Gregorio, Angie, Pablo, Jackie, and Beto)
  • Villain Song: Downplayed with Destinada a Brillar. While it is Ludmila's Leitmotif, other students do sing it from time to time.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?:
    • We never find out what happens to Esmeralda after Jade frames her for stealing German's money.
    • We also never find out with what happens to the boy band project sponsored by the studio that Leon and his friends were going to participate in near the end of the season.
  • What Song Was This Again?: The English dub and the translations used in the original were victims of this. Some songs got at least handful of the lyrics correct (Destinada a brillar to Destined to Shine), but others ended up changing lyrics completely (Voy por ti to More Tears).
  • World of Ham: It's an Argentinian soap opera after all.
