The Powered Combat Vest, commonly abbreviated as P.C.V. is a protective vest worn by the Marines of the Hazardous Environment Combat Unit and Military Police, over which the LC-2 Harness is worn.

Overview

Upon military approval, it entered use by the Hazardous Environment Combat Unit and certain elements of the Military Police.

Part of the combat equipment used by the HECU in their initial incursion into Black Mesa and during the events that occur throughout Half-Life storyline, the PCV is designed to protect the user from chemical, biological, radiological and physical threats during operations in the unit's defined battle space. The vest increases the effectiveness and versatility of the user, allowing them to operate in environments which are outside the normal bounds of the regular infantry.

Combine

The PCV is compatible with a gas mask resembling the M40 Field Protective Mask with built-in Night-Vision Goggles. In addition, the PCV includes a Geiger counter, morphine administrator (which allows the soldier to function normally even after serious injury), a Tactical Radio and a Head-Up Display (HUD) in the protective mask lens which tracks the user's medical condition and weapon ammunition. The vest contains an on-board computer system that constantly monitors the user's health and vital signs and reacts to any changes in the user's condition, although, unlike the HEV, there's no audible computer that alerts the user and is instead used a HUD in the helmet. Like the HEV, it absorbs 66 percent of the damage the player takes.

Additionally, during the events seen in gameplay, the PCV provides complete protection to the center mass of the user, protecting the torso, abdomen, shoulders, and back. This is provided by the electrically powered shield which stiffens the fibers of the suit to provide a hard, resilient layer of armor to absorb the kinetic energy. With a fully charged vest, the user can survive several dozen rounds of small arms fire or even a direct hit from a rocket propelled grenade. The PCV also provides protection from high level electrical and thermal energy, biological and chemical threats when sufficiently charged. The PCV can be charged by power modules either from the operational area or specially designed models which form part of the unit's arsenal.

It may be noted that the PCV is comparable to the HEV Suit, which is worn by several Black Mesa personnel, including Gordon Freeman. This similarity is mostly attributed to the types of equipment included in both. In addition, the Powered Combat Vest's armor charge is also rechargeable at civilian, military or government electrical chargers, including those that are designed specifically for HEV Suits. This has led to fans speculating that the PCV is either a precursor, or a derivative of the HEV. However, the PCV includes night vision goggles as opposed to the HEV Suit's flashlight. This suggests that the PCV is simply a military adaptation of HEV technology, combining the level of protection of an HEV Suit (which exceeds that of current ballistic vest technology) with night-vision technology that gives soldiers the considerable advantage of being able to operate at night. Another speculation is that since the PCV is military hardware designed for the battlefield where chargers are limited while the HEV is for research, the Powered Combat Vest's batteries may be designed to take in energy from whatever source available.

While the Half-Life storyline suggests that both the PCV and HEV Suit are separate pieces of equipment, the similarities between both may simply be the result of Opposing Force's programmers modifying the HEV Suit's interface from Half-Life to that of a PCV for Opposing Force.

Trivia

  • In multiplayer mode, the server player can change the integer of cvar mp_flashlight. When the server player turns on the night-vision goggles and types mp_flashlight 0 in console, the green noisy screen will be gone, but the player and their surroundings will glow brighter. In addition, the player HUD color also changes to white (not green as usual).
  • When shooting at the gas mask soldier's helmet with Crowbar, pistol, MP5 and shotgun, he won't take any damage. However, in Half-Life: Source, the helmet is still bulletproof to these weapons, but are vulnerable to Crowbar's attack.
  • Modern military ballistic armor gives 9-12 hits against rifle bullets in a much smaller zone, and is consideraly heavier.

Half-Life 2 (stylized as H位LF-LIFE2) is a first-person shooter video game and the sequel to Half-Life. Developed by Valve Corporation and published by Sierra Entertainment, it was released on November 16, 2004, following a protracted five-year $40 million development, during which a substantial part of the project was leaked and distributed on the Internet.

This game is separated into short-length chapters.

Plot

The game takes place some years after the events of Half-Life, where the protagonist, Gordon Freeman, is awakened by the enigmatic G-Man to find out that the world has been taken over by the alien Combine due to events that occurred at the Black Mesa Research Facility, the setting of the first game. Gordon encounters human resistance forces that aid him, including former associates from Black Mesa, among them Dr. Eli Vance and his daughter Alyx. Alyx joins Gordon as they search for a way to eliminate the Combine from Earth and free humanity.

Why It Rocks

  1. The game revolutionized graphics and physics due to being made in the Source engine, which was capable of more emotion in characters and beautiful environments that look lifelike.
  2. Amazing soundtrack.
  3. Instead of the same copypaste scientists and security guards that Half-Life 1 had, there are more types of NPCs and even new characters who are extremely likeable.
  4. More backstory about the protagonist, Gordon Freeman.
  5. Brilliant plot and story, with two Episodes expanding upon it.
  6. The Gravity Gun allows for more creative combat, such as throwing an explosive barrel at a group of zombies, and it also creates clever physics puzzles in some cases, which is another thing the game excels at.
  7. Awesome voice acting.
  8. Allies can help out more in combat.
  9. It introduces vehicles, which spice up the gameplay a little.
  10. The fact that Episode Three is yet to come spawned a meme.
  11. Great modifications, including some of them that improve the graphics such as Half-Life 2: Update (available on Steam).

Bad Qualities

  1. There was a big leak which ruined/halted game development during the last months of 2003, thus cutting down most or all working ideas or already added gameplay and etc. not found in retail for 'Half-Life 2 Beta's enthusiasts' or 'Valve beta fandom' sub-community. But the community either brought few of them back in both main game and its episodes as references, nods and, brought back outright but reworked for fitting the plot of episodes or given permission using them by Valve for modding purposes or recreating them from scratch.
  2. The amount of weapons is more limited than in the prequel (most likely because of the infamous leak). Also, they seem less creative than the HL1 weapons, and there being no alien weapons (excluding the Bugbait) at all.
    • While mentioning Bugbait, since it's an alien bioweapon, it resulted and unintentionally create a gameplay plothole, which in the final version the weapon is infinitely making balls, somehow while not showing where the ball regrows in Gordon's suit or where it came from; despite showing it in the leak, a concept art, and E3 trailer with the same name (which the final latter shown a five/six of them are all equipped to trying 'address'/fixed the plothole, rather than one of them and leaving it existed in the final version), that originally seen it was carry in limit way (1 to 5/10 balls).
  3. Lack of enemies from HL1 or even new ones not found in retail, and they were (if not all) planned to be there due to the leak, gameplay having them playing in a background or minor antagonistic roles.
  4. For old players, the game might be a bit short due to various maps being cut, again due to the infamous leak that released almost all of them in near to mostly completion.
  5. Resistance NPCs quickly become annoying in next two chapters for hardcore players who want kill Combine alone.
  6. The game itself has aged a bit, since it was made in 2004.
  7. The VPK era of HL2 requires newer components in the computer and a GPU.
  8. Some of the music tracks are recycled from the prequel, such as the 'Lambda Core'/'Diabolical Adrenaline Guitar' during the Hunter-Chopper chase in Water Hazard chapter.
  9. The ending in Episode Two is a MASSIVE cliffhanger and Valve has shown no interest in ever making nor releasing Episode Three for onereason.
